Google Play 16 KB Page Size: Does Your Android App Need Changes?

The 16 KB page size rule sounds technical, but for most apps the answer is simple: it either does not affect you, or it affects one specific file type. Here is how to tell.

The short answer

Google's documentation says that apps targeting Android 15 (API 35) or higher must support 16 KB memory page sizes on 64-bit devices. At the time of writing it states that from 1 February 2027, an update that does not support this cannot be released.

Who is affected

Only apps that contain native code. Your app has native code if any of these is true:

  • It includes C or C++ code, for example through the Android NDK.
  • It uses a third-party library or SDK that contains .so files.
  • It was made with an app builder that adds native libraries.

Who is not affected

Apps written only in Java or Kotlin, with libraries that are also only Java or Kotlin, already work on 16 KB devices. Google still recommends testing them in a 16 KB environment, which is part of any proper update test.

How to check your app

  1. Unzip the release APK or bundle and look for a lib folder. If there are .so files, you have native code.
  2. Note which library each .so belongs to.
  3. Check whether that library's newest version supports 16 KB pages.

How it is fixed

  • Your own native code: rebuild with current NDK settings that align the libraries correctly.
  • A third-party library: update to a version that supports it. A prebuilt library can only be rebuilt by its owner.
  • An abandoned library: replace it.

Frequently asked questions

My app is only Java and Kotlin. Do I need to do anything?

The libraries already work on 16 KB devices, but you should still test the app in a 16 KB environment as part of the update.

What is a .so file?

A compiled native library. If your app contains any, the 16 KB requirement can apply to it.

Can you tell me if my app is affected?

Yes. We check your files and tell you exactly where you stand, as part of the free check.
